General FAQs

How do I order a custom cake?

Custom cakes are for cakes for 50+ servings. Start out by inquiring here (bottom of the page). The more details, the better! Please note that an inquiry is not considered an order until details are finalized and the retainer is received.

Most clients reach out at least 2 weeks in advance for celebration cakes from our Designer Cake Collection, and 6 months to 1 year in advance for wedding and other custom cakes. However, we strongly encourage you to reach out as soon as possible to ensure availability. If it's a rush order, we’re always happy to accommodate if our schedule allows. Any rush orders will incur a fee to cover the cost of the additional labor to fulfill on a tight timeline. 

What is the price of a custom order?

Buttercream cakes start at $12 per guest for a simple buttercream decorations and fondant cakes start at $16 per guest for simple decorations. To request a quote, please fill out the form here (bottom of the page) with as much detail as possible.

What can I expect after my inquiry?

We will respond to your inquiry via e-mail and may ask you some follow-up questions if necessary to make sure we have a good understanding of your vision. If you're not exactly sure what you want, that's okay too! We're happy to work with you on brainstorming ideas. To place an order, a non-refundable 50% retainer is required upon booking.

How does payment work?

For custom cakes, a non-refundable 50% retainer is required to secure your event date. The remaining balance is due 1 month prior to the wedding date. For custom cakes booked less than one month before the date, the full amount is due to secure your order.

If the full payment is not received in a timely manner, Silver Whisk Bake Shop, LLC may cancel your order.

Do you offer vegan, nut/dairy/soy-free, or gluten-free cakes?

We currently do not offer vegan, dairy, soy, or gluten-free cakes. We do have nut-free options.

We take allergies very seriously and you should inform us if someone in your party has an allergy. Although we thoroughly clean and sanitize equipment and tools after every use, they have all at one point been in contact with tree nuts, peanuts, dairy, soy, and wheat.

If you or someone in your party has an allergy, we will put immense care into preparing your order but we cannot guarantee that there has not been cross-contamination.

What is your cancellation or refund policy?

Because of a full schedule and attention to detail, we spend many hours planning and preparing before even beginning on a cake. If your event date has been rescheduled, please contact us as soon as possible. If we are booked on the rescheduled date, we are happy to provide a refund for the amount of work that has not been completed.

Rescheduled dates will incur a fee of $150.

All non-refundable retainers are final and no refunds are given under any circumstance if your cake has been completed.

My event is outside, will the cake be safe outside?

Any cake placed outside during an event has the possibility of melting or deforming due to heat and humidity. If you have an outside wedding or celebration, we are happy to discuss with you your options of where you can display the cake.

Buttercream reacts the same way as butter does; it melts under heat, it is the perfect texture at room temperature, and gets firm when cold. Therefore, it is necessary to keep your cake away from heat and humidity to avoid disappointment. We are not liable for a cake once it has been delivered or picked up.

How do I pick up? Do you offer delivery?

Silver Whisk Bake Shop is an online-based bakery located in the surrounding Boston area and orders are made in a facility that is unfortunately not open to the public. 

Pick up's will be through a secure self pick up locker in Malden, MA. The address and pick up instructions will be provided after your order is placed via email (upon email confirmation).

1-tier and 2-tier cakes are available for pick-up while 3+ tiers require delivery. Cakes are very heavy and should be professionally delivered so that your cake arrives safely in one piece. Delivery service is available for all sized cakes. The delivery price is determined on an individual basis and depends on the location of the event and if set-up is necessary.

How do I transport or store my cake?

Cakes travel best on flat surfaces in air conditioned or room temperature vehicles (think the trunk of your car, the floor of the car in the back, or the passenger seat pushed back and put on the ground of the passenger seat). During the summer, this is especially important because buttercream reacts the same way as butter does — it's the perfect texture at room temperature, firm and unpleasant if eaten cold, and it may melt or deform if it's too hot and/or humid.

For leftovers, the best way to keep the cake fresh is to put plastic wrap over the cut parts of the cake and to place it in an airtight container or back into the cake box and into the refrigerator.  When you're ready to eat a slice (or two), cut the amount you want and leave it out at room temperature to let the buttercream soften up.

For individual slices, it usually takes about 20 minutes. Cupcakes can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 2 days (nothing beats cupcakes on the first day though!).

Yes! We cater to corporate events. Clients in the past include: Target, Butcher Box, and more.

Classic Vanilla

Our vanilla cake is a butter-based recipe, where we cream butter and sugar together until it’s super light and fluffy. Full of rich flavor with a delicate crumb texture, we can’t get enough of this cake!

Our Swiss meringue buttercream is meringue-based incorporated with creamy butter, resulting in a light and airy buttercream that is just sweet enough. Our vanilla is sourced from a company in France with over 70 years experience in the industry. The vanilla used is a bouquet of vanilla varieties, when combined, results in a wonderfully complex and unique fragrance and flavor. This is every vanilla-lover's dream come true!

Fresh Strawberry

Our fresh strawberry buttercream makes this cake sing! A classic combination of vanilla and strawberry.

Our vanilla cake is a butter-based recipe, where we cream butter and sugar together until it’s super light and fluffy. Lemon Raspberry

Our lemon cake is a butter-based recipe with a splash of lemon added to the batter for a refreshing, bright, and fragrant cake. Paired with a refreshing lemon buttercream tangy raspberries, this is the equivalent of a bright sunny day.

Double Chocolate Mocha

Our double chocolate cake is intensely chocolate forward  and we are not sorry! Our top secret recipe includes quality cocoa powder, semi-sweet chocolate, and a subtle hint of espresso. Our super light and airy Swiss meringue buttercream is blended with espresso and a hint of cocoa powder for a deep mocha flavor. Hint: this cake is perfect with a hot cup of coffee.

Dark Chocolate & Salted Caramel

Paired with a light and dreamy vanilla Swiss meringue buttercream, a homemade caramel sauce that’s rich and buttery, and sprinkled with flakes of Maldon sea salt, this cake is decadent, salty-sweet heaven!

Chocolate Matcha & Black Sesame

Our double chocolate cake is intensely chocolate forward and we are not sorry! Our top secret recipe includes quality cocoa powder, semi-sweet chocolate, and a subtle hint of espresso.

Our matcha buttercream is made with Grade A matcha green tea powder from Shizuoka Japan blended into our Swiss meringue buttercream for a complex and earthy flavor with a touch of sweetness. Toasted black sesame is sprinkled in-between each cake layer for a slightly nutty taste and pops of fun texture. This cake flavor was inspired by the creativity of one of our wedding couples!

Pick Up Instructions

Pick up is available for one and two-tier cakes. Three-tier cakes require delivery.

Pick up will be through a secure self pick up locker in Malden, MA. The address and pick up instructions will be provided after your order is placed via email (upon email confirmation).

Cakes travel best on flat surfaces in air conditioned or room temperature vehicles (ex: trunk of your car, the floor of the car in the back, or the passenger seat pushed back and put on the ground of the passenger seat). This is especially important during warmer months.

When holding the cake box, hold it from the bottom sides (don’t squeeze the sides!).

Outside Events

Any cake placed outside during an event has the possibility of melting or deforming due to heat and humidity. If you have an outside wedding or celebration, I am happy to discuss with you recommendations on where it is best to display your cake.

Deliveries

Surprise deliveries are sometimes made to recipients (we love this!). When making a surprise delivery order, please include the recipient’s full name and phone number so we can call them in case we have trouble reaching them. If someone will be with the recipient and you prefer to share their contact information, that’s great too!

If we’re unable to reach the recipient, we will wait for 5 minutes. After 5 minutes, the cake will be placed outside their doorstep/building. Silver Whisk Bake Shop is not responsible for the cake after it has been delivered. Please keep this in mind especially for warmer months to prevent the cake from melting if left outside for too long.

Enjoy Your Cake!

Your cake will be fully chilled when you receive it. To enjoy the cake at its best, let the cake come to room temperature by letting the cake sit in the box somewhere at room temperature for at least 2-3 hours. If you’re picking up right before an event, taking the cake out of the box after pick up is fine too! 

To take the cake out of the box, we advise customers to open the top of the cake, then undo the side flaps on the front of the box so you can slide the cake right out.

Storing Leftovers

You have great self-control!

To store leftovers for 2-3 days, put the leftovers in the cake box and wrap with saran wrap or store leftovers in an airtight container. Place leftovers in your refrigerator. When you're ready to eat a slice (or two), cut the amount you want and leave it out at room temperature to let the buttercream soften up. For individual slices, it usually takes about 20 minutes.

To store leftovers for up to one month, place leftovers in an airtight container and freeze! Our cakes freeze beautifully. To enjoy, slice the amount of cake you’d like and let it come to room temperature (~30 minutes). Do not microwave it, just trust us on this one ;)

Storing Cupcakes

Cupcakes can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days (nothing beats cupcakes on the first day though!). For cupcakes, take the amount you want out of the container from the refrigerator and leave it out at room temperature to let the buttercream soften up a bit (about 20 minutes).

Cancellation & Refunds

We take on a limited number of cake orders each week, and turn down other potential orders once your order is booked so that we can focus completely on your cake. As such, we have the following cancellation policies in place:

  • Cancellations made with 28 or more days notice are fully refundable.

  • Cancellations made within 14 days notice are 50% refundable.

  • Cancellations for orders due in less than 14 days will be fully charged which are non-refundable.

Cake Changes

Changes to your order may be made if your event is more than 30 days away. Please note that changes may change your price.

We’ll review your requested changes and let you know in advance if there is a price change. This applies to our Designer Cake Collection only. 

If you are inquiring about a rush order, we’re always happy to accommodate if our schedule allows. Please note, any rush orders will incur a fee to cover the cost of the additional labor to fulfill on a tight timeline.

Cake Tastings

Yes! We offer cake tastings for cakes for 50+ guests. Cake tastings are shipped directly to customers’ doors. At this time, we are not offering in-person cake tastings because your health and safety and our team’s is our priority.

Cake Changes

Only the Client(s) or their event planners are authorized to place an order or make changes to the Agreement. No other individual (e.g. mother, father, mother-in-law, father-in-law, sibling, relative, friend, etc.) shall contact Silver Whisk Bake Shop, LLC directly regarding the order. Changes to your cake order: size, description, flavors, etc. will be accepted until 1 month prior to the event date. Changes may incur additional costs. After that date, I cannot accept any changes.

Cancellation Policy

In the event that something occurs and affects your scheduled event date – please contact me as soon as possible to discuss options. I understand things can come up that are out of your control. Non-refundable retainers will not be refunded. If there was payment received above the retainer amount, your order may or may not be refunded for the portion over the retainer amount depending on the amount of work already completed. Each cancellation will be handled on an individual basis.

Outdoor Site

Any cake placed outside during an event has the possibility of melting or deforming due to the heat. Silver Whisk Bake Shop, LLC is not liable for your order once it has been delivered to your event location. Silver Whisk Bake Shop, LLC is not liable for your order after it has been picked up by or for the client.

Allergies

Silver Whisk Bake Shop, LLC products may contain or come in contact with milk, wheat, nuts, cocoa or other allergens. While every precaution will be taken in the cases of known allergies, it remains the full responsibility of Client to inform guests of possible allergens. Silver Whisk Bake Shop, LLC is not responsible for any allergic reactions.

Vegan, Gluten-free, Nut/Dairy/Soy-free Cakes

We offer options for vegan, gluten-free, and nut/dairy/soy-free cakes for custom cakes only. We do not currently offer these options for our Designer Cake Collection.

P.O. Boxes

We unfortunately cannot ship to P.O. Boxes based on UPS conditions.

Silver Whisk Bake Shop ships to residential addresses, business, venues, and apartments.

If you’re shipping your order to a public place like a hotel, venue, or hospital, please include the hotel/venue in addition to the name of the recipient. We recommend you let the destination know that a perishable item will be delivered to them so they are aware. Silver Whisk Bake Shop cannot guarantee the time of delivery during a specific timeframe.

Incorrect Mailing Address

Orders to incorrect mail addresses are final and are not refundable. Please double check that the address is correct prior to ordering.

Shipping Delays

We try our absolute best to ship your products around the planned delivery time frame. Unfortunately, unforeseen circumstances may arise which may disrupt your shipment and cause delays (ex: high volume of orders, weather conditions, holidays, etc.). Sometimes these factors will throw off FedEx and UPS’s operations. Because we use third-party companies to ship our products, we cannot guarantee a delivery date.
